Navigating Agency Conflicts and Marketing Shifts: Media Volery Chats on The BeanCast
One of the most popular and longest-running marketing podcasts, The BeanCast Marketing Podcast hosted by Bob Knorpp, recently featured Media Volery president Zontee Hou on a lively panel discussion. Joined by Saul Colt (president of The Idea Integration Co.) and Jonathan Sackett (VP of Marketing & Communications, NEI), the group tackled pressing topics in marketing and advertising today—from the Omnicom/IPG merger to Meta’s AI ambitions, from navigating search in 2025 to Costco’s DEI commitment.
The Challenge of Client Conflicts for Marketers
A central thread of the conversation focuses on the unique challenges agencies face when serving clients in the same industry. Bob raises the question: At the holding company level, is it still realistic to avoid overlap? Zontee highlights that while some clients can accept “walls” between teams, others—particularly in cutthroat industries like travel and hospitality—won’t tolerate even the possibility of shared information.
Zontee lays out one of the challenges with holding companies from an internal perspective, saying you’re effectively trying to give your clients competing stories at the same time: “You’re telling them, ‘Hey, we don’t communicate between our teams; however, we do have the benefit of economies of scale, or learning, or centers or excellence,’ and you can’t really have it both ways.”
It’s a candid reminder of the balancing act agencies must perform: honoring client trust while delivering value through broader organizational resources.
